Updating to Mark Version 2.0

Updated: Aug 21, 2021

It’s been nearly three years since my last post, and wow, has a lot happened since then!

Since then, I have graduated from Medical School, nearly finished my two years as a junior doctor (House Officer) in Auckland, and recently been accepted into The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists’ (RANZCR) 5 year Registrar training program in order to become a Radiologist.

For the first 9 months as a junior doctor, I was also working for Crimson Education as the VP of Academic Advising at MedView, together resulting in an average workweek of 100-110 hours per week. It was an exhilarating learning experience with immense growth both personally and for the company (Crimson filmed me at Waitemata DHB to provide some insight on what it was like). Though it certainly was not sustainable, hence my transition to an Advisory Board Member where I can still enjoy contributing to the overarching strategy of the company while mitigating my risk of burnout.

I have since gotten involved in a number of exciting research projects, including investigating the impact of e-scooter injuries in the Auckland region, as well as using big data analytics to help identify key predictors of cardiovascular disease. Watch this space for a few of these results coming out in the coming weeks and months 😉

To add to all this, I recently got engaged to the lovely Amy Okamura-Kho, who I met on my medical elective in Tokyo, Japan, shortly after my last blog post. Life has been incredible with her ever since, where she has been an inspiring source of joy and guidance that has driven me a lot further forward since.

Currently, my areas of focus are on continuing research and work with Crimson Education, studying for my Part 1 RANZCR Exams, upskilling in Artificial Intelligence using Fast.ai and involving myself more heavily in the Radiology/Imaging community. I’ve discovered the great utility of Twitter in academia so I plan to be a lot more active on there – feel free to follow me on Twitter if you enjoy academic chat!

I hope to gradually update this blog to reflect what I’m doing currently as well as post more frequently. One of the first upcoming posts will be about why I chose Radiology as a specialty within Medicine and what I hope to achieve within this exciting field – as a testament to the wide range of opportunities available within medicine.
